Shelter Programme

Provision of shelter for GBV survivors was WRAP’s initial intervention in August 1994 and, as a result, it is WRAP’s core business as far as referral partners are concerned. The Shelter Programme comprises Shelter Home and Clients’ Welfare Departments. The Shelter Home Department oversees client accommodation, and coordinates therapeutic activities for the clients in the shelter. The department also addresses educational and recreational needs of children in the shelter.

The Clients’ Welfare Department oversees procurements of foodstuffs, toiletries and items needed by clients in the shelter. The department also coordinates clients’ access to referral services; the department verifies and authenticates expenses, both for client referral and staff activities. Besides addressing the need for an alternative and safe accommodation for adult and child GBV survivors, the Shelter Programme also enables clients to access counseling, legal aid/advice, and other GBV-related supportive services directly or by referral.

Clients in the shelter are involved in various empowering and therapeutic activities, including self-defense lessons and skills training on embroidery; crocheting, tailoring, catering, making of mats, dyeing of clothes and such other skills; and by forming therapeutic support groups;.Reconciliation of minors with their parents, wards or guardians, re- integration of minors with their immediate families, and resettlement of minors into a more conducive environment are also coordinated through the Shelter Programme.
